Our Approach

Woodhouse Academy Student Community Life Playing Foosball

Supporting the Whole Student

At Woodhouse Academy, our program is built on the belief that true growth encompasses the whole student academically, socially, and emotionally. As a Connecticut State Approved Special Education and therapeutic day school, we use an evidence-based approach that integrates strong academics with comprehensive therapeutic support.

Each student’s program is individualized to their strengths, needs, and goals, with an emphasis on self-awareness, self-advocacy, and independence. Through this integrated model, students gain the tools and confidence to navigate challenges and apply what they learn to the real world.

Woodhouse Academy Teaching

A Team-Based Approach

Our interdisciplinary team, including administrators, teachers, social workers, and related service providers, works collaboratively with families, districts, and outside clinicians to ensure each student receives coordinated, individualized care.

Regular team meetings, open communication, and ongoing progress monitoring allow us to create personalized academic and therapeutic programs that reflect each student’s learning profile. Every member of our team shares one goal: to help students achieve meaningful success in school and in life.

Program Components

We accomplish this through the following key components of the Woodhouse program:

  • Educational & Therapeutic Programming
  • Individualized assessment and goal-setting
  • Differentiated instruction and small class sizes
  • Integrated therapeutic support within the school day
  • Social and emotional learning (SEL) and self-regulation strategies
  • Executive functioning skill development
  • College and career readiness programming
  • Support for school avoidance and reintegration when appropriate

Connection and Confidence Building in a Supportive Environment

Woodhouse Academy’s small, welcoming campus is designed to help students build practical life skills alongside academic and emotional growth.

Students develop independence and confidence through:

  • Collaborative, project-based learning experiences
  • Hands-on activities that connect classroom lessons to real-world applications
  • Community & Enrichment
  • Arts and culinary programming that foster creativity and engagement
  • Community activities and experiential learning opportunities
  • Structured social recreation periods to promote connection and belonging
  • A safe, therapeutic setting that encourages personal responsibility, communication, and teamwork

At Woodhouse, every element of the program works together to help students take meaningful steps toward academic achievement, emotional wellness, and lifelong success.

Therapeutic Services

Therapeutic integration provides students with opportunities to develop strategies to manage their emotional or mental health challenges to better engage in learning and their education. This is accomplished by:

  • Small-group counseling led by licensed school social workers
  • Collaboration with a consulting supervisor for case review and staff consultation
