At Woodhouse Academy, students thrive with the right mix of challenge, support, and a pace that fits their needs. Our Connecticut state-approved program serves grades 6–12, balancing academic rigor with personal growth. Guided by the Understanding by Design (UBD) framework, teachers prioritize deep, conceptual learning.

Course Offerings

English Language Arts

Students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening through a mix of classic and contemporary texts, with options that build voice and analytical skill. Representative courses include General English; Literature and the Human Condition; Truth, Perception, & the Human Experience; Foundations: Stories of Identity & Power; Voices Through Time: Literature & Composition; Creative Writing; Journalism; Film Studies; and Middle School English.

Mathematics

Pathways span Middle School Math and Pre-Algebra through Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus, plus applied options such as Personal Finance and Statistics. Courses emphasize problem solving, real-world applications, and conceptual understanding.

Science

Offerings include Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Forensic Science, along with health-related electives such as First Aid and CPR, Medical Terminology, Kinesiology, and Middle School Science. Instruction blends hands-on and virtual labs with inquiry and analysis.

History/Social Studies

Students explore U.S. History, World History, Civics, Mythology, Sociology, Medieval History, Psychology, Anthropology, and Middle School Social Studies, using primary sources and case studies to connect past and present.

Arts

Students build creativity and technical skills through Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Animation, Culinary, and Music. Assignments are personalized to support each student’s learning style and ability.

Health & Physical Education

Health emphasizes social-emotional learning, self-advocacy, and overall wellness. Physical Education focuses on fitness, teamwork, and motor skill development, while Yoga provides a mindful alternative centered on adaptability and self-development.
